U1.T1.Review and Assess

Today we are:  Reviewing Opaque, Translucent and Transparent as well as the different sources of light
We will: practice what we learned and look at examples of different light sources.

I will show you I understand: by completing the topic 1 review on Moodle.


1.  Watch this please.  When done, login to Moodle and make a blog posting.

2.  LETS REVIEW

  • What makes light?  What did your group find most interesting?  Did we have anything was the same as others?  What was different?
  • What do opaque, translucent and transparent mean?  Let's review these terms and actions.
  • Light can be produced by many different sources.  Let's look at some examples.

3. Yesterday you did the practice moodle quiz.  Today I want you to do the Topic 1 Review.  It is located right below "the introduction to quizzes"  Good Luck.

4.  When done, grab your textbook and look over Topic 2, starting on pg. 188

3.  I have shared your TODO list.  In your shared documents on google drive, I have your todo list.  If you complete it before the end of the day, you do not have to attend friday school.  YOU MUST indicate that you have completed everything in that document.

U1.T1.Catchup

Today we are:  Catching up on everything.
We will: Learn how to make a bookmark and cc someone on an email.

I will show you I understand: By bookmarking moodle and emailing remind 101 to my parents.


1.  Watch this please.  When done, login to Moodle and make a blog posting.

2.  Create a bookmark on your desktop or screen so you can quickly access moodle.  This will depend on if you are using the ipad mini or your own device.

3.  Find the shared document called" Remind 101.  Copy the text and then email it to your parents.  you must cc me.  I will show you this.

U1.T1.Light Sources

Today we are:  Looking at different ways light can be produced.
We will: Learn the new vocabulary watching some you-tube videos.

I will show you I understand: By completing the questionnaire.



1.  Watch this please.  When done, login to Moodle and make a blog posting.

2.  Incandescent light sources are the idea light bulbs.  Watch this video to see how it works and this video to see how it's made.

3. Chemiluminescent is light from a chemical reaction.  Watch the first 2 minutes of this video to see what is really going on in glow sticks.

4. Bioluminescent is light from a reaction in living things.  Watch this video to see how it works and here are some cool examples.

5.  Phosphorescent and Florescent are very similar.  This video compares them.  This is the hard one, so I'll help you.  Phosphorescence can use regular light to glow, but Florescence needs higher energy light or what is known as UV light.  Here is a quick video that shows a Florescent light bulb.

6.  All Done!  If you think you got it, complete the questionnaire.

U1.T1.Intro to Light and Optics

Today we are:  Looking at how we Classify various materials as transparent, opaque, or translucent, and describe the behaviour of light when it strikes different materials.

U1.T1.Paperless Intro

We are going to try to do this unit without paper!  Way Cool!

To start, we need to be able to access 3 sites.

1.  My website.  If you're reading this, you did it!  Congrats.  Give yourself a pat on the back.
2.  Moodle.  moodle.westwind.ab.ca "don't type www!"  Go here and login to the Science 8 class under Stirling School.   The enrol key is science8.  Now the hunt begins.  Find your profile, then Blog, then add a new entry.  Now add something!  Almost done.
3.  Google Drive.  Access your Westwind Email.  Now find your google drive section.  Create a new document and share it with mark.iwaasa@westwind.ab.ca


Congrats.  You did the intro basics.
